Taos County and Taos MainStreet Announce Plaza Gazebo Renovations as Part of Plaza Improvement Project

Taos, NM — August 20th, 2025 —Taos County and Taos MainStreet are pleased to announce that the next phase of the Plaza Improvement Project is officially underway, with construction now in progress on the renovation of the historic Taos Plaza Gazebo. These long-anticipated improvements are designed to preserve the Plaza’s unique character while making it a more vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming space for the entire community.

The scope of work, led by R and M Construction, includes:
• Roof repairs and treatment of dry rot
• Electrical system upgrades
• Enhancements to the bandstand
• Renovations to the storage facilities beneath the gazebo
• Improved accessibility with a new ramp
• Surface repairs in areas surrounding the gazebo Renovations are expected to be complete by Halloween 2025, in time for Halloween festivities.

A subsequent phase of improvements is scheduled to begin in early spring 2026 and aims for completion by summer 2026. Additional details for the next phase will be announced as plans advance.

This significant community investment is supported by $1,000,000 in capital outlay funds secured by Taos MainStreet through the New Mexico MainStreet Capital Outlay Program. This project is possible thanks to the community partnership of Taos County, the Town of Taos, New Mexico MainStreet, and Taos Mainstreet. With the Town of Taos having completed the first phase by repairing critical underground infrastructure, Taos County is now leading the effort to deliver the long-awaited above-ground improvements that will enhance the Plaza’s functionality and vibrancy.

“These improvements represent an important step in honoring our history while reinvesting in our future,” said Charles Whitson, Executive Director of Taos MainStreet. “The Historic Taos Plaza belongs to everyone, and these upgrades will reestablish it as the center of our community life, a place for gathering, celebration, and the revival of traditions and events that once thrived here, while also creating space for new activities to take root.” “The Plaza Gazebo renovations are part of our commitment to preserving and enhancing one of Taos’ most treasured public spaces,” said Brent Jaramillo, Taos County Manager. “We are excited to see this project moving forward in partnership with the Town of Taos and Taos MainStreet.”

Together, these efforts will ensure the Historic Taos Plaza continues to thrive as a cultural and civic centerpiece for generations to come.
