Taos Plaza Gazebo Phase II Construction Meeting
September 11th, 2025 - Overall, the renovations on the Taos Plaza gazebo are on track and should be completed on, or near target dates announced. Currently, work on the deck and surrounding areas involve two facets, with demolition of certain parts of the stage area and its approaches (stairs) still taking place; along with the construction of new ramps and improved standing areas. The main theme of this particular meeting was about safety, and how the new design will remove hazards for persons using the shaded gazebo (such as performers and casual visitors) and those moving around the sides of the structure. Thus, grades throughout the project are carefully assessed to provide smooth transition from existing roadways, sidewalks and terrains onto the site.
Demolition of the descending double stairwell – located on the south side of the gazebo – is slated to begin Monday, Sept. 15. According to representatives from R & M Construction, one staircase will replace the double-stair layout that leads to the subterranean room below the gazebo. A new access ramp on the north side of the stage has been formed, and is ready for concrete to be poured. Brick pavers have been installed on the north side of the interior plaza, and it was reported by representatives from Gecko Landscaping that a drip irrigation system was installed under the new surface. Completion of this area was key, due to the needs of the Paseo Project happening Sept. 12 and 13. Having finished installing brick pavers and moving construction material from the front of the gazebo, workers were able to adjust the safety fence’s position to allow for more space for Paseo attendees to walk through the interior plaza.
Aspects of Phase III were brought up for discussion, as infrastructure for solar shade structures are slated to be installed as well. These removeable “tents” will serve as screens for people attending mid-day events on the plaza. Designs for the mounting apparatuses, and the technical needs associated with the installation of those mounts were hinted.
